What to Expect on Your First Visit
Pamela J Mayle, LMT, NCTMB, CIMI

Whether you have already had a massage or this is your first one, knowing what to expect at your initial visit at Body for Life Massotherapy will help you feel comfortable and relaxed as soon as you step in the office.
Upon arrival to your appointment, you will be asked to complete a confidential questionnaire regarding your medical history and lifestyle habits. This will enable your therapist to determine whether massage is indicated, if you have any local or general contra-indications, and what techniques would be most beneficial to your needs. This information helps the therapist customize the best treatment plan for you, incorporating the different skills and techniques she has learned. The therapist will take time to talk with you regarding any problem areas you want addressed, and your expectations - what you would like to see happen as a result of your massage therapy. She will encourage you to ask questions throughout the massage, let her know if the pressure could be more or less, or if you are uncomfortable in any way. The goal is to alleviate pain and discomfort, not create it. Creating pain only causes muscles to tighten up, which does more harm than good.
For the massage, you will be covered with a sheet, with only the area being worked on exposed. However, your modesty is respected and you will be encouraged to only undress to what you feel comfortable with. Conversation during a massage is a personal preference. Some clients prefer to focus on the touch in quiet surroundings, while others enjoy engaging in light conversation.
At the conclusion of the visit, a few minutes will be taken to review the massage; what you felt was helpful, techniques you liked or didn't like and what you would like to see accomplished at your next visit. Recommendations may also be given to you at this time for changes in lifestyle habits, stretching excercises, or possibly referral to a medical professional for any problems outside the scope of massage.
Massage increases circulation and releases toxins as well as lactic acid in your muscles. You will be encouraged to drink plenty of water which in turn will flush these wastes from your system. Inadequate intake of water may cause you to feel irritable, experience headache, nausea, or even soreness the next morning.
Communication is the key to a successful, rewarding massage. Your input before, during, and after the session provides valuable information. Whether your massage is for relaxation purposes or medically focused, every visit is charted and documented. This enables the therapist to provide consistent top quality care that will make your session as comfortable and therapeutic as possible.
